About UnschoolingZA

I started this blog in February 2009 as the mother of a baby boy living in Cape Town, South Africa. I have developed an interest in unschooling and have noticed a lack of coherently organised resources about home education and unschooling in South Africa. I’m hoping this blog will contribute positively to the growing community of home educators out there! Feel free to leave comments or email me.

  1. I was surprised to come across this webpage, delighted, though! Two years back there has not been very much interest in unschooling in RSA.
We’ve been unschooling our son (4 years old) from birth, rather unconsciously at first, but now with greater awareness. I would like to recommend Naomi Aldort’s book “Raising our Children, Raising Ourselves” and all of her audio material. She has been my greatest source of inspiration. Any other unschooling families out there who would like to meet?! Please email me!
    Best wishes,

Hi Angela. I know this reply comes a little late 🙂 I have a 3 year old son who is currently at a school as I am still working full time. I have been interested in unschooling for a while now but am seriously considering it as an option for our kids in the very near future. If possible, could you please give me your perspective on unschooling. How has it been working for you/ Are there many unschooling families in Cape Town with whom one can interact with etc. I have so many questions.

    Thank you

I just came across your blog for the first time today. I think it is great. I am a SA mom homeschooling my 2 kids in London and it is great to be able to read about someone doing something similar back in my home country. Love it !!!!

Hi…So happy to find your site! I am currently unschooling my four children and have been for 13 years…with a few months in-between-being-scared-and-unsure. We are in the Helderberg area outside of Cape Town and would love to share ideas and experiences.

Hi. Hoping that things are great for you.
I have been missing your thoughts in the homeschooling space. I am doing a series of interviews with homeschoolers, educators etc and would really like to add your thoughts – if interested would you mind popping over and contacting me via the Contact Us on my blog. Hope to hear from you. 🙂

      Hi Aadila
I’d really recommend checking out the unschooling in South Africa Facebook group. I wish I were unschooling, but the truth is that as a family we just aren’t there yet…

    Hi there,
I just fell into your blog as I’m searching through the web for any information if unschooling is possible in south africa.
Me and my family are from Germany and we stay in Cape Town for 3 months to work here.
My son is supposed to go to school in Germany next year – but before that might happen we will move out of the country!
We have always lived an unschooled life with our children, it’s so beautiful to watch them grow up like this every day..
Maybe you are interested in meeting.
How old are your kids now? Mine are 5 and 2.
we live close to some playgrounds here… 😉
Would be happy to hear from you,
